The 15th Annual Paul W. Smith Golf Classic

The 15th annual Paul W. Smith Golf Classic was held earlier this month at the historic Detroit Golf Club and featured a full day of golf, camaraderie, and dining with nearly 300 corporate and community representatives in attendance. Championed by its namesake, host and radio legend Paul W. Smith from WJR-AM 760, the Paul W. Smith Golf Classic has raised close to $6.5 million net since its inception in 2004.

According to Smith in a story in the Detroit News, “The goal of the tournament since the beginning has always been the check we write and the kids who benefit from it. Each year we are overwhelmed by the commitment and generosity of the corporate community and the many caring individuals who have helped us raise nearly $6.5M in net proceeds.”

This year’s funds went to Detroit PAL (Police Athletic League) along with two additional charities that serve children with vital services, The Children’s Center and Variety and Children’s Charity of Detroit. Smith added, “We saw the impact we were making on the number of children Detroit PAL reached and knew we could extend that reach.”

This year, the Paul W. Smith Golf Classic raised just over $470,000 vital dollars that will positively impact an estimated 40,000 young people in the area. Since its inception, this event has been considered one of the region’s most productive charity golf outings with vital support from a range of key corporate sponsors.  Each year, traditionally, WJR has served as Title Sponsor and Ford Motor Company as Tournament Sponsor. Additionally, this year’s Presenting Sponsors were: Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, DTE Energy Foundation, General Motors Corporation and Toyota Motor Sales, USA.
